Okay, well things have been real hectic, so I find little time to update this blog as much as I had hoped. Excuses are out of the way now, so let’s get to today’s new tutorial.
I worked in large format at one time and when I did we would do large tiled projects to deal with say wall murals or vehicle wraps. At the time I would take the design and utilizing cropping masks and such I would create individual files to individually print thru our Mutoh large format printer.
Today, I work for an excellent advertising company in Orange County, and I found myself the other day looking at a file from one of our creative directors. He had used a little feature of Illustrator to design a project with tiles. Not the first time I’ve seen his projects done this way, but this time I had to find out how he did it. It turns out to be real easy.
So, first I create my document. I want it to be printed on four pieces of 8.5″ x 11″ paper, for our example. So I make it 17″ x 22″.
And I am going to place one of my favorite projects from college. My poster for “Dial M for Murder” that was done for a local playhouse.
We need to go to the PRINT option under File.
Now we go to Setup Tab and Select Tile Full Pages. and then we don’t need to select print, we just hit Done.
Now when we save it, this file is set up for page tiling.
If we select View Tiling we will see the tiling marks:
Now, I know that when I hit print at work it would come out to 4 separate pages. I wish that I could test this on a real RIP, like ONYX or something. If any large format printers get a chance let me know if this works or helps out at all.
Till next time, keep designing.
